The largest chain of movie theaters in Thailand accepts Bitcoins

Major Cineplex Group has begun accepting Bitcoin as part of a cryptocurrency pilot project

Major Cineplex Group, the largest operator of cinemas in Thailand, has reportedly allowed some of its customers to purchase tickets in cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin (BTC).

According to a report by local news agency Siam Rath on Thursday, Major Cineplex announced the launch of its pilot cryptocurrency payment project in a move to support innovation and new technologies.

To unlock the new payment option, the company has partnered with local cryptocurrency exchange ZipMix and digital payment startup RapidZ.

Major Cineplex launched the new feature for the first time at the Major Cineplex Ratchayothin Cinema in Bangkok on March 4, allowing customers to purchase tickets with Bitcoin via RapidZ by scanning a QR code. Major Cineplex expects to extend the pilot program to 39 additional cinemas across Bangkok by the end of 2021.

The news appears to be the first time in history that the Thai movie theater has accepted cryptocurrencies as a method of payment.

Narut Jiansanong, a spokesman for Major Cineplex, said the new initiative aims to attract more clients who are investing in cryptocurrencies. He said the number of Bitcoin owners in Thailand is now estimated to be up to 1 million, which is 2% of the country's total adult population.
